BYD plans new electric sedan Seal 08
The BYD Seal 08 comes in two power levels (110 kW and 160 kW) and two battery sizes (46.1 kWh and 56.6 kWh), as can be seen from the Chinese documents. With these data and a length of 4.72 meters, the new Seal 08 is close to the BYD Qin L EV, which is also about to launch – BYD applied for approval for this model last week.
BYD is thus continuing its strategy of launching very similar models in its two different model series ‘Dynasty’ and ‘Ocean,’ at least in China. The Dynasty series is known in Europe for the Han and Tang EV luxury models, while the Ocean series is known for the compact electric vehicle Dolphin and the mid-range sedan Seal. While the separation of the series in Europe is clearly based on price and segments, that is not necessarily the case in China.
The Dynasty series, with its more sophisticated design, is aimed at a more mature clientele, while the Ocean series, with its flowing design lines, is meant to appeal to a younger target group. That way, BYD aims to tap into broader groups of buyers with a technical basis. In the case of the Seal 08 and Qin L EV, the company aims to do this in the affordable electric saloon segment. CarNewsChina assumes that the starting price for the model with the smaller battery will be less than 150,000 yuan (approx. 20,000 euros).
As usual, BYD will use its own blade battery, i.e. an LFP battery. At 4.71 meters long, 1.88 meters wide, 1.50 meters high and 2.82 meters wheelbase, the Seal 08 is exactly the same size as its sister model. The kerb weight of 1,670 or 1,800 kilograms (depending on the powertrain) is also at the same level.
The electric motors in both versions are also from BYD itself. The 110 kW TZ180XSR is installed in the basic version. Paired with the 46.1 kWh battery, the car has a range of 470 kilometres in the Chinese test cycle. The 160 kW TZ200XSBE electric motor is used in combination with the 56.6 kWh battery, with a CLTC range of 545 kilometres.
