On 12 June, Autohome published spy shots showing an almost fully undisguised test mule of the BYD Ocean-M concept’s production version parked on a public road. The badging on the car’s tailgate revealed that it has been named ‘BYD 06 GT.’

In May, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) inadvertently leaked the production version BYD Ocean-M as the ‘BYD Seal X.’ However, while the car featured that name, its additional data indicated that it wasn’t final and three other names were under consideration: BYD Seal 06 GT, BYD Seal Mini, and BYD Seal 05 EV. Thanks to the new spy shots, the final name has been exposed.

The BYD Seal 06 GT has only subtle changes from the concept version. At the front, the raised section in the centre of the bonnet looks less extreme, the lower area has air intake grilles, and the headlamp cluster is slightly different. The production car has a less aggressive bumper and skips the concept’s splitter.

On the sides, the BYD Seal 06 GT has regular, glass-based mirrors instead of the concept’s camera-based digital mirrors. The A-pillars, cantrails, and wheel arches, are body-coloured instead of gloss black, while the A-pillar inscription, decals on the doors, and skirts with large aero fins have been skipped.

At the back, the BYD Seal 06 GT settles for a simpler roof spoiler and high-mounted stop lamp. The revised diffuser-style bumper doesn’t look as sporty as that of the concept, but on the plus side, it integrates vertical air outlets to make up for the lost sportiness. The tail lamp graphics also have a watered-down look, obviously.

According to the specifications released by MIIT, the BYD Seal 06 GT should measure 4,630 mm in length, 1,880 mm in width, and 1,490 mm in height and have a 2,820 mm wheelbase. Its line-up will likely include a 160 kW single-motor RWD variant, a 165 kW single-motor RWD variant, and a 310 kW dual-motor AWD variant, all with an LFP battery pack and a 200 kph top speed.

The BYD Seal 06 GT is expected to go on sale in China in Q3 2024, with prices falling approximately in the 150,000-200,000 yuan (19,302-25,735 euro) range.
