Cupra to launch electric Formentor before 2030
This was confirmed by Seat boss Wayne Griffiths at the annual press conference, according to Autocar. It is to become an important part of Cupra’s expansion into the USA. In the official press release, the manufacturer merely writes that Cupra is planning to launch in the USA by the end of the decade with the electrified version of the Cupra Formentor and a larger crossover SUV. According to Autocar, the latter will also be purely electric – in line with the brand’s plan to only sell electric cars from 2030. Incidentally, the larger crossover SUV, which Cupra only refers to as “electrified”, is to be built at a VW plant in North America.
The current Formentor has been on the market since 2020, so a model change in 2027 or 2028 would correspond to the usual product lifespan. At the time, the Formentor was the first model to be developed directly for Cupra and was not derived from a Seat model. The MQB evo from Volkswagen serves as the basis, so the Formentor is also available as a plug-in hybrid.
With the MEB models Born, which is built in Zwickau, Germany, and the Tavascan, which comes from China, Cupra currently has two BEV models on offer. A third model is soon to follow with the Raval small electric car, which is built together with the VW ID.2 at the Seat plant in Martorell.
