Europe: Upgraded Kona Electric available late 2019
Hyundai has published the specifications for the new all-electric Kona model to be delivered in Europe by the end of this year. The upgraded electric compact SUV features new charging capabilities.
The most important innovation in the new Kona Electric is a three-phase onboard charger with up to 11 kW (AC). This charging capacity allows for shorter charging times either with public 3-phase AC charging stations, or a private compatible wall box at home.
The Kona Electric also has a new optional navigation system with a 10.25-inch centre display, with a standard new eCall safety feature. Here, the charging control system provides information on the expected charging times and ranges. When a partial charge is required, or if the Kona is to be charged at a specific time, drivers can just programme both options in advance. These functions can also be managed via the Blue Link app on a smartphone.
Hyundai first revealed the electric SUV Kona early last year. The Korean company offers the vehicle with two different battery sizes and various assistant systems. In June, the Hyundai Kona Electric was listed with a starting price of 34,600 euro in Germany.
Although the South Korean company insists that deliveries will follow around the end of this year, a certain scepticism cannot be avoided: buyers in Germany and also Norway for example already have to prepare for long delivery times with current models. Hyundai comments on this only indirectly in their current press release: “The worldwide impressive demand for the popular Kona Electric version has even exceeded our own expectations”, writes the carmaker.
In addition to the Kona Electric, Hyundai also offers a portfolio for drivers looking for less or no emissions consisting of the Ioniq electrified trio of models (Hybrid, Plug-in, Electric), 48-Volt hybrid versions of Tucson and the fuel cell-powered Nexo.
