EDP installs 650 fast-charging points at Aldi shops in Portugal

The supermarket chain Aldi has commissioned the energy supplier Energias de Portugal (EDP) to install and operate more than 650 fast-charging points at shops on the Portuguese mainland. The charging points will be installed at more than 140 existing shops and new Aldi stores.

EDP states that the chargers will have an output of between 60 and 120 kW but has not given a breakdown of the power to the individual charging points per charging station or whether CHAdeMO and/or Type 2 will be offered in addition to CCS.

The initiative clearly covers both the more than 140 existing Aldi shops and the new stores due to open in 2024 and 2025. In addition, EDP has also been commissioned to operate the existing charging infrastructure at 34 shops.

The charging points will be connected to the public Mobi.E network of the state-owned company of the same name. They will be activated using a Portuguese RFID card (CEME). The announcement does not indicate whether other payment methods will also be provided.

The 650 new charging points significantly expand the EDP charging network, which currently consists of more than 3,300 charging points in over 195 municipalities in all districts of the country. Since EDP invested in the development of electric mobility in Portugal, more than two million charging sessions have been carried out at the company’s publicly accessible charging points.
