Fastned to install fast-chargers in London

Charge point operator Fastned and Places for London will set up a joint venture to install ultra-rapid charging hubs across London. The first five sites will be operational in 2026 - with more to come as the partnership progresses.

The initial five locations will offer a total of 50 charging bays. Apparently, Places for London started the procurement process while it was looking for a partner, so the joint venture should be able to start as soon as it is formed. According to Fastned, that should be before the end of the year.

But back to the first locations: Fastned states that “each site has the potential to deliver a minimum of six publicly accessible ultra-rapid charging bays, including at least one bay for those with accessibility needs.” The exact locations were already announced in 2023 and are Hanger Lane, Canning Town, a car park next to Hatton Cross Tube station, Tottenham Hale, and Hillingdon Circus.

In addition, the new joint venture plans to install a further 25 sites in the future – “at least.” According to the charge point operator, the joint venture could build as many as 65 hubs “as market demand and opportunities arise.”

Places for London is Transport for London’s (TfL) property company. Together with Fastned, it wants to increase the number of fast-chargers in the British capital. The sites will not only feature charging points but also offer toilets or retail space, provided the locations are big enough.

“We are excited to have now selected Fastned as our preferred partner for our new joint venture to bring forward a number of new electric vehicle charging hubs,” says Mark Farrow, Director of Strategy and Planning at Places for London. “These new charging hubs, the first of which will open in early 2026, will make it even easier for those who need to rapidly charge their electric vehicles, with several bays at each location, helping London to further work towards the Mayor of London’s commitment to achieving Net Zero carbon by 2030.”

Tom Hurst, UK Country Director for Fastned, adds: “Londoners deserve a top-notch EV charging network for all those daily trips and longer journeys. That’s why we’re excited and proud to be bringing more ultra-rapid charging to key locations across the city – all helping to ramp up London’s transition to electric.”

Fastned is no stranger to London. It already operates “one of London’s busiest ultra-rapid charging hubs in Greenwich.”
