For its EV Charging Index, the P3 Group looks at electric cars sold in a specific region and ranks them according to long-distance capabilities, real-time charging, and consumption. The Kia EV6 won the last European comparison in 2022, while the Lucid Air GT was the winner of the P3 Charging Index North America.

More than two years later, P3 is getting ready to publish a new Charging Index for Europe, as many new models are available here. For example, the Lotus Emeya, which was the clear winner of the Charging Index Asia earlier this year. Second place went to the Porsche Taycan, and Hackmann believes that “Porsche will keep pushing to beat Lotus” in terms of charging power.

The manager explains that in order to determine a winner, his team uses the same charger and the same conditions to test all the vehicles. “The battery is at a very low level and we start charging […] and then we have a look at the charging power and a look at the time.” But the EV also has to be efficient to win the comparison. “That is important because if you have a consumption of 30 kWh/100 km, that is not a good consumption, and that car should not be the winner of the P3 Charging Index.”

As mentioned above, the last P3 Charging Index Europe was published in 2022. That is because the company needed enough new cars to test, which is now the case. According to Hackmann, the Porsche Macan will be part of the upcoming Charging Index, as will updates from other OEMs and “lots of cars from Asian contenders.”

Whether the Lotus Emeya will also win the European Charging Index remains to be seen. “I think it is quite hard for the other cars. But in terms of consumption, some cars could surprise us.”
