It is said to be the largest deployment of fuel cell vehicles in China to date. The vehicles were delivered by H2 Solution, a joint venture between Hyundai HTWO Guangzhou and two local state-owned enterprises. They include logistic vehicles, freezer trucks, road sweepers, and buses.

Another 1,000 vehicles will follow, as the government of Guangdong Province, whose capital is Guangzhou, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Hyundai HTWO Guangzhou to deliver 1,500 units. Delivery will be completed before the end of the year.

The fuel cell systems will be produced at the Hyundai HTWO Guangzhou plant announced in 2021, which commenced commercial operation on 1 June last year. The plant has a capacity of 6,500 systems per year and includes a stack factory, a research building, offices, and an innovation centre.

It is Hyundai’s first fuel cell production base outside South Korea. The manufacturer says it has invested 8 billion yuan, approximately 1.1 billion US dollars.

According to local media, the partnership between the regional government and Hyundai could continue beyond the current order. Guangdong Province issued a municipal hydrogen plan in late December, saying that it wants to have 2,500 and 10,000 FCEVs on the road by 2025 and 2030, respectively.
