Char.gy to deliver 1000 new EV chargepoints in Enfield

The London Borough of Enfield is set to gain 1000 new charging points, which will be delivered in partnership with Char.gy. These will primarily be retrofitted to lampposts, although several new standalone EV chargers will also be installed at five sites across the borough.

According to Enfield Council, the project will focus on delivering low-cost overnight and long-stay charging for residents who lack off-street parking. Char.gy will fit the chargers “directly into streetlight columns” across the borough in order to provide “close to home” charging for Enfield residents.

There’s no word yet on which hardware will be deployed in Enfield; however, similar Char.gy deployments in the UK have seen the CPO install its ‘Flow’ range of projects. These small, box-shaped units use Type 2 connectors and can be easily mounted on lampposts within two hours. A data sheet on Char.gy’s website outlines some other key specs, including 5kW and 7kW charging variants, contacless or app payment, and ISO 15118 (Plug & Charge) capability.

Residents are currently being invited to fill in a request form and put forward their suggestions for where the chargers can be installed. The council states that all suggestions “will be reviewed against installation criteria, including technical suitability and accessibility”.

In addition to street chargers, Enfield Council has confirmed that new standalone charging towers will be installed at five sites across the borough to replace older EV charging equipment.

Councillor Maria Alexandrou, Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “One of my priorities is to speed up opportunities for electric vehicles charging in Enfield and finally, we have a significant offer for drivers. We know that access to convenient, affordable charging is key to helping residents make the switch to electric vehicles. By expanding our on-street charging network, we’re making EV ownership a realistic option for far more people. This is a major step forward in our ambition to support a more sustainable transport system in Enfield.”
