Next Opel Astra to be built in Rüsselsheim on STLA One platform

Stellantis has just announced plans to manufacture the next generation of the Opel Astra at Opel's main plant in Rüsselsheim. This model, along with three other new models, including the announced E-SUV based on Leapmotor, is set to launch by 2030.

The next Opel Astra will not only be produced in Rüsselsheim but also designed and developed at the new global Opel headquarters, known as the grEEn-campus. The latest generation of this classic compact car classic will be based on the STLA One platform, a completely new, overarching ‘mega-platform’ that consolidates five previous architectures into one system. STLA One is itself part of Stellantis’ new strategic plan, ‘FaSTLAne 2030’, which was unveiled by the group in May.

Since 2023, the Opel Astra has been available as a battery-electric variant based on the EMP2 platform. In late 2025, a mid-cycle facelift was introduced. During this update, the high-voltage battery’s energy capacity increased from 54 to 58 kWh (55.4 kWh net), enabling a WLTP range of up to 454 kilometres—34 kilometres more than before.

This time around, Opel has not yet revealed which powertrain options the next Astra will offer but has confirmed that the current model is available in four variants: battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, hybrid, and diesel. This range of options will also be compatible with the new STLA One platform, as Stellantis is developing it as a modular vehicle architecture for the B, C, and D segments, supporting multiple powertrain types. STLA One is set to underpin 30 models across different brands by 2035, with an annual production target of 2 million units.

“The allocation of the next-generation Astra to our plant in Rüsselsheim demonstrates Opel’s commitment to Germany as an industrial location. I am delighted that Rüsselsheim will remain the home of the Astra and be built in the direct vicinity of our new grEEn-campus,” says Opel CEO Florian Huettl. “This investment is a clear sign that together with our social partners we can reach agreements that benefit all stakeholders.”

According to Hessischer Rundfunk, the decision to produce the next Astra generation in Rüsselsheim will secure around 1,350 production jobs. Additionally, apprentices and dual students graduating by winter 2028/2029 are set to be retained. However, the exact start date for production of the next Opel Astra remains unclear.

As part of the new FaSTLAne 2030 strategic plan, the Stellantis Leadership Team, led by CEO Antonio Filosa, has classified the historic German automaker as a regional brand, which is expected to benefit from global powerhouses such as Fiat, Peugeot, Jeep, and Ram. Meanwhile, the group is currently investing over one billion euros in Germany, primarily in the new headquarters of Opel and Stellantis Germany.

The next Opel Astra will not be the only new model in the pipeline. Opel CEO Florian Huettl has also announced that the German manufacturer plans to introduce at least three additional new models by 2030. These include the next Opel Corsa and an as-yet-unnamed battery-electric SUV in the C-segment, based on Leapmotor technology, which is set to be built in Zaragoza, Spain.
