Rally-inspired Opel Mokka GSE to enter production

Opel has announced that it is creating a production series version of its unusual Mokka GSE e-rally car. The company has said it didn't want the driving experience limited to motorsports professionals.

It’s based on the Opel Mokka GSE Rally, a rather bold-looking electric rally car which debuted at the ELE Rally in the Netherlands last month. There, Opel revealed a prototype vehicle featuring 207kW-power drivetrain, 345 Nm of torque, yellow-black colouring, rally accents, and huge ‘OMG! GSE’ text printed on the body. It featured a number of other racing components including a roll cage, a crash protection system and a 54 kWh battery.

Now, Opel has announced that it plans to release a production version of the GSE Rally to the general market: the Opel Mokka GSE. Opel VP of Current Product, Marc Fetzer, said: “During the development of the Opel Mokka GSE Rally, it quickly became clear to use that we did not want to reserve this incredible feeling only for motorsport professionals. Opel customers should also be able to enjoy this particularly powerful, direct and uncompromising driving experience. That is why we are putting the Mokka GSE into series production.”

The company states it will share many of the ‘traits’ and components of the Rally version, including aspects of its appearance and performance elements. Exact details on this have not been shared yet, so there’s no answer whether it will feature the racing-specific fittings such as the rollcage.

Opel says this is because the Mokka GSE is ‘camouflaged’ and still undergoing tests, including real-world data from professional rallies which it says will “be incorporated into the series version of the Mokka GSE”. That’s also why there’s no precise word yet on pricing, release date, or a production timeline, but Opel states it will continue to release news as development continues.
