Ireland’s Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien, announced earlier this month that €7.9 million euros worth of funding will be provided in grants towards charging infrastructure. The new chargers will be operational by the end of 2025.

O’Brien said: “We’re taking real, practical steps to make electric vehicles work for everyone. With more chargers, more choice, and more support, we hope even more people will feel confident making the switch to electric. These high-powered chargers are a key step in that process.”

The initiative is being funded through the Light Duty Vehicle (LDV) aspect of the Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI) programme, and will be delivered by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). It marks the first phase of a wider plan to build a nationwide charging network that maintains a maximum distance of 60km or less between charging hubs. In this case, it means charging hubs will be located along 1200km of national single carriageway roads. No technical details about the chargers themselves have yet been shared, and additionally, it’s worth noting that the tender process is currently CPO-agnostic. A number of charge point operators are currently active in Ireland however, including EasyGo, Ionity, DKV Mobility and others.

The government states that commercial enterprises with publicly accessible sites, such as petrol stations, car parks, hotels, supermarkets or retail outlets will be able to apply for the grant process in order to receive funding. Peter Walsh, CEO of Transport Infrastructure Ireland, said: “Working in partnership with ZEVI and the private sector, this scheme is helping us build the kind of infrastructure people can rely on: fast, efficient and accessible.”
