BC Hydro has installed nearly 600 charging points

BC Hydro has hit a major milestone, tripling its electric vehicle public fast-charging network over the past year to a total of 591 charging ports across British Columbia. This makes for an average of more than one port installed each day.

In total, 22 new hubs have opened in every region of the province, with each featuring between 8 and 22 charging ports. BC Hydro also deployed new 350-kilowatt high-power chargers at some locations. BC Hydro estimates that about 195,000 electric vehicles are currently on the Canadian provinces’ roads, which is “projected to soar to between 700,000 and 900,000 within the next decade,” meaning that the charging infrastructure will be sorely needed before long.

The network expansion not only took place in terms of locations but also in terms of power output, as the BC Hydro network grew from 10 megawatts in April 2024 to 41 megawatts by March 2025. The power company further specifies that 85 per cent of charging ports are fast chargers, and that the network supports CCS, NACS and CHAdeMO connectors.

Following the completion of the Electric Highway project, there are now fast charging stations placed every 150 kilometres along major routes, of which BC Hydro operates about 70 per cent, or a total of 155 charging locations. For its next steps, the energy firm is looking to expand its charging network to 800 charging ports by 2026. This year, BC Hydro is also planning on introducing a new 400 kW charging station, which is capable of charging up to 100 km worth of power in about 3 minutes. BC Hydro is also part of a coalition working on electric truck charging infrastructure in North America.

“B.C. is home to one of the fastest-growing EV communities in North America,” explained Adrian Dix, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions. “With more than 98 per cent of BC Hydro’s electricity generated from renewable sources, EV drivers in B.C. are driving the charge toward lower greenhouse gas emissions and a cleaner future. Together with BC Hydro and other partners, we have built one of Canada’s largest public EV charging networks to help reduce range anxiety and encourage more British Columbians to make the switch to electric vehicles.”
