Tesla raises Canadian prices amid tariffs in the US
The background to the adjusted prices appears to be Canadian tariffs imposed in response to tariffs on the automotive industry introduced by US President Donald Trump. According to a summary from the US portal Electrek, the increase ranges between 13 and 22 per cent. The price hike for the Model 3 Performance, rising by 10,000 CAD from 79,990 to 89,990 dollars, represents the smallest absolute and relative increase at 13 per cent. Meanwhile, the two available Cybertruck variants, with two and three motors respectively, are now 22 per cent more expensive. For the three-motor Cyberbeast, this equates to a price jump of 30,000 CAD, from 137,990 to 167,990 dollars.
Tesla currently only offers its global bestseller, the mid-size crossover Model Y, in the Long Range All-Wheel Drive variant in Canada. Previously priced at 69,990 CAD, this version was among the most affordable Teslas in the country, just 1,000 CAD more expensive than the Model 3 Long Range AWD. However, with a 15,000 CAD or 21 per cent increase, the Model Y Long Range AWD now costs 84,990 CAD, positioning it exactly between the Model 3 Long Range and Model 3 Performance models, which are priced at 79,990 and 89,990 CAD, respectively.
The price increases apply only to newly ordered vehicles that still need to be imported into Canada — Tesla supplies the Canadian market with all models from its US factories. Teslas already in Canada, or those imported and stored before the tariff dispute, are still being sold at the old prices. Currently, Tesla’s Canadian website redirects customers primarily to the inventory page for new and used vehicles rather than the online configurator.
According to Electrek, for most Tesla models, ‘prices are now above most pricing restrictions to access the EV incentives’ in Canada following the current price increases. However, specific programmes, price thresholds, and affected models were not detailed.
The Canadian market has proven challenging for Tesla for several months. Since the trade dispute initiated by Trump, many Canadians have been boycotting American products, leading to the rise of a ‘Buy Canadian’ movement. Additionally, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has alienated many Canadians with his political commentary, including the claim — echoing statements by Trump — that Canada is ‘not a real country.’ Consequently, Tesla’s sales figures in Canada have been declining for some time.
Electrek estimates that Tesla still has ‘significant inventory in lots across the country’ and warns that, given the ongoing difficulties, “a total collapse in demand” could now be expected following the price rises.
