Kia EV drivers gain access to US Superchargers

Owners of the Kia EV6, EV9 and Niro can now access over 21,500 fast chargers on the US Tesla Supercharger network, all via the Kia Access app. It brings the total of DC chargers available to Kia drivers up to 40,000 across the States, marking an 80 per cent expansion.

Kia has also made NACS adapters available via its dealerships, so that older Kia EVs can take advantage of the Supercharger network. Those who bought a Kia EV6 or EV9 after 4 September 2024 will get a free adapter, while other drivers will have to purchase them from dealerships. Moving forward, the company states its newer EVs will features NACS ports as standard – including this model year’s EV6 and 2026 EV9.

Using the Kia app, drivers will be able to locate and navigate to available charging stations as well as view charger availability, status and pricing. It appears they will need to enroll in the Kia Charge Pass program via the app in order to do this. Additionally, certain vehicles may require a software update. Kia said in a statement: “Over-the-Air features and updates may require an additional cost and may vary by model, model year, and trim level.”

Kia was set to provide Supercharger access much earlier this year, specifically on 15 January 2025. However, this was delayed to ‘the first quarter of 2025’, with no reason given at the time.

Seungkyu Yoon, CEO & President of Kia North America, said: “Kia is committed to an exceptional ownership experience and expanding the network of available DC fast chargers to our EV customers is an important component to maintaining the brand’s leadership in electrified mobility. Now, with access to the Tesla Supercharger network of DC fast chargers, our EV owners can feel even more confident in their decision to purchase or lease a fully electric Kia vehicle.”

Kia is the latest EV brand to offer up access to the Supercharger network, following Tesla’s decision to publicly licence the NACS to other EV manufacturers in the US. Brands such as Ford, Volvo, GM, Honda and Polestar are all offering NACS adapters for their older EVs or including NACS ports as standard on their newer EVs.
