Ionity to install Alpitronic’s first megawatt chargers in 2025

Fast-charging joint venture Ionity will become the first charge point operator to deploy Alpitronic’s new HYC1000 megawatt charging system. Despite the use of the term ‘megawatt charging’, this rollout does not involve MCS charging for electric trucks but is aimed at passenger EVs.

Alpitronic first unveiled its megawatt solution in mid-February 2025. The system channels power via a central power cabinet to up to four charging dispensers, each offering two CCS connectors. While the setup can be configured with both CCS and MCS cables – the latter for heavy-duty vehicles – launch partner Ionity will focus exclusively on fast charging for electric cars. As such, all units in this rollout will be equipped with CCS cables only.

A single cabinet can support up to four dispensers, each with two CCS connectors, enabling the simultaneous charging of up to eight electric vehicles – with dynamic power distribution between the charge points. According to Ionity, individual vehicles could be charged at rates of up to 600 kW when fewer cars are connected. During its February reveal, Alpitronic cited 480 kW as the maximum output for CCS-based systems, limited to 600 amps. The MCS version – not relevant for this deployment – can deliver up to 1,000 kW per vehicle.

The rollout will begin with validation testing at Ionity’s test facility in Unterschleißheim near Munich, starting in May. These trials aim to ensure full compatibility with a wide range of EVs – both in terms of hardware and software. Once testing concludes, Ionity plans to begin a widespread deployment of the HYC1000 across its European network in the second half of 2025. Specific countries or locations have not yet been disclosed.

“By integrating the HYC1000 chargers, we’re giving our customers access to some of the fastest and most advanced charging technology available today,” said Ionity CEO Jeroen van Tilburg. “We’re not just keeping up with innovation — we’re leading it, building the infrastructure of tomorrow. This integration marks another key milestone in our mission to deliver ultra-fast, convenient charging at scale for EV drivers across Europe.”

Philipp Senoner, CEO of Alpitronic, added: “With the HYC1000, we’re introducing a new era of scalable ultra-fast charging – combining megawatt-level performance with intelligent power distribution. We’re proud to partner with IONITY to bring the next level of charging performance to EV drivers across Europe.”
