Lion Smart begins delivery of NMC+ battery platform samples
The first solution based on the platform is the Lion Smart Mobility Power 53, which provides a scalable, modular system for implementing custom battery systems based on a standardised architecture. LION states the platform deploys “advanced cell chemistry” and “optimised thermal management” to achieve increased energy and power density. The platform is designed to be adapted to a wide range of applications – from light BEVs and commercial vehicles to battery storage systems.
The first samples will be used by Lion customers for testing these different applications. Lion states it aims to obtain data on performance, integration and scalability in real-world conditions, and bring this to bear on optimisation of the final product. Following this, the company aims to ramp up its series production by the end of 2025.
Joachim Damasky, CEO of Lion E-Mobility AG, said: “NMC+ is not just a new generation of batteries – it forms the foundation of our platform strategy, which enables scalable and market-oriented product development. We are thus creating the conditions for shorter development cycles, reduced project costs and a faster market launch – while at the same time achieving maximum performance. We are delighted to be taking this next step together with our customers.”
It is likely that LION Smart will source the cells for its battery packs from the Chinese firm SVOLT, following the announcement of a partnership between the two companies in 2023. In the same year, LION Smart relocated its production from Dingolfing in Lower Bavaria to Hildburghausen in Thuringia, and has a current annual production capacity of two GWh. According to Lion Smart, around 4.8 million battery cells can be assembled into packs annually at the factory – corresponding to about 50,000 packs per year.
