UK: DPD tests MAN eTGX electric truck

Manufacturer MAN has partnered with package delivery service DPD in the UK for customer trials. The latter will use MAN's all-electric eTGX for operations on a dedicated DPD route.

The truck will be towing a standard trailer, says MAN. The base will be DPD’s Hinckley Hub 4. There, MAN will offer ‘a comprehensive induction and driver training program’ before sending the truck out for real-world operational testing.

“We’re proud to partner with DPD on this important journey towards electrification of their HGV fleet. These trials will provide invaluable insights for both companies as we work towards a greener future,” said Tracey Perry, Sales Director Truck, Bus & Coach. “Achieving the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Climate Agreement requires bold action, and electric trucks like our eTGX are a critical part of that mission.”

MAN does not mention how long the tests will run or if DPD will test the electric vehicle on other routes as well. The press release merely states that ‘MAN Truck & Bus UK is thrilled to launch a series of e-Truck road trials in partnership with DPD,’ indicating that there will be more than one.

The company could, however, be referring to another project. The CEP provider and MAN are also working ‘to develop a configuration optimised for double-decker trailers.’ The latter increases efficiency, as DPD can transport more parcels per truckload. A ‘first tailored vehicle’ will hit the road later this year.

Tim Jones, Director of Marketing, Communications & Sustainability, DPDgroup UK commented, “Electric HGVs have the potential to become a viable solution in the future, and we now believe we can get the configuration we need to maintain our double-decker trailer fleet, which has enabled us to reduce the overall number of HGVs we put on the road for many years. We are keen to help to develop the electric trucks that can work for us in the real world.”
