Oakland to install nearly 250 new AC chargers

The City of Oakland in Northern California has approved the installation of 244 Level 2 public chargers. All stations will be commissioned before the end of the year and are part of an 'Innovation Lab' fundend by the California Energy Commission.

The chargers will be installed at a total of eight locations, for example, at the Oakland Museum of California and the Marriott Convention Center. The majority of them will be installed in parking lots and garages.

According to the city, some locations will have ‘on-site battery systems’. However, the announcement does not go into detail. All 244 chargers will be supplied by Flash, which will also upfront the installation and the operations. Nevertheless, Oakland will receive “half of net revenues from charging,” the City emphasises.

“Oakland is committed to building a greener, more sustainable future, and expanding our public EV charging infrastructure is a critical step in that journey,” said Interim Oakland Mayor Kevin Jenkins. “These new chargers will make it easier for Oaklanders—especially those who don’t have access to at-home charging—to choose clean transportation.”

“This collaboration with CEC and the City of Oakland is a huge source of pride for us at Flash,” said Matt McCaffree, Vice President & General Manager of EV Charging at Flash. “We’re showing what’s possible for the future of parking plus charging and playing a part in helping Oakland and other smart cities make the EV transition a reality.”

This is not the first time Oakland City and Flash have worked together. The latter already installed its AC chargers at two locations in the city last year as part of an EV charging ‘Innovation Lab’ that Flash is setting up and that is funded by the California Energy Commission (CEC) with 5.8 million dollars. Data from the chargers will be used to “provide technical and financial insights to improve efficiency, dependability, and return on investment to the City of Oakland.”
