The Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa has now has 100 locally assembled electric buses in service. They serve on the Bus Rapid Transit, a new public transportation route in the city.

According to Chinese news agency Xinhua, the buses were ‘assembled by the local company Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex.’ However, the components were imported from China. The images show that the buses sport the Golden Dragon logo.

There is no information on the model or how and where the buses are charged. On her Facebook page, mayor Adanech Abiebie states that the electric buses “are equipped with a digital ticketing system, digital bus card system (Bus Card System), supported and controlled by cameras and GPS and have a system developed in the country.”

Ethiopia is serious about electrification. Last year, the government announced that it planning to import 439,000 electric vehicles by 2030. It also hopes to install 2,226 charging stations across the country, 1,176 of which will be in the capital Addis Ababa. Moreover, in 2024, the country imposed a ban on petrol imports.

Electric vehicles can be powered by homegrown energy due to the country’s abundant hydropower resources. Nevertheless, most vehicles driven in Ethiopia are second-hand with higher pollution levels than newer models. The resulting pollution levels are an additional factor in the Ethiopian transition to electric vehicles.
