Samsung SDI kicks off production of 46-series cylindrical batteries
The 4695 batteries have a diameter of 46 mm and are 95 mm high. They are rolling off the production line at the company’s factory in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province of South Korea. The assembly of the cells into battery modules takes place in Vietnam.
According to Samsung SDI, its 46-series batteries have a high NCS cathode “and proprietary SCN (Silicon Carbon Nanocomposite) anode.” That should increase energy density and the cell’s lifespan, “while preventing the batteries from swelling as part of strengthening safety.”
In terms of design, the South Korean manufacturer opted to do away with traditional tabs. That means that the electrodes are directly connected to the current collectors, said to improve “the current flow path and reduced internal resistance by 90 per cent, providing higher outage.”
Several manufacturers currently want to install cylindrical cells with a diameter of 46 millimetres in their vehicles. Besides BMW, there are GM and Tesla. Samsung SDI could thus have several well-known customers for its cylindrical cells. Its lineup now includes four battery sizes – namely 4680, 4695, 46100 and 46120.
“With the initial supply of 46-series batteries, the company has diversified its product portfolio,” an official at SAMSUNG SDI said. “The company will continue efforts to take the lead in the 46-series market with differentiated manufacturing technology and quality.”
A pilot line for cylindrical cells in Cheonan was first announced in 2022. At the time, there was talk of 4680 batteries for Tesla and shorter batteries for other customers. Samsung SDI will also manufacture 46-series cylindrical batteries for BMW’s Neue Klasse in Goed in Hungary.
