Ionity introduces new pay-as-you-go UK charging tariff ‘Ionity Go’
The new tariff is designed to function as a combination between classic subscription models and ad-hoc charging but is more similar to the latter from a user perspective. This is because charging with Ionity Go does not require a contract or a basic fee: Ionity refers to it as a ‘pay-as-you-go’ solution, meaning users only pay for immediate charging. However, registration on the new Ionity app is mandatory. This is the difference from classic ad-hoc charging, which costs 0.74 £/kWh at Ionity in the UK- and works entirely without registration.
Tariff | Basic charge | Price per kWh |
Ionity Motion | £5.49 (£3.88 in the first month) | £0.53 |
Ionity Power | £10.50 (£7.00 in the first month) | £0.43 |
Ionity Go | – | £0.71* |
Ionity Direct | – | £0.74** |
*with registration
**without registration
Ionity emphasises that registration in the new version of its app is a prerequisite for the new tariff, as it comes with several revisions. In future, the app will make it easier to plan routes, find charging stations, track the charging process and pay in the 24 European countries of the Ionity network. “Users start and end sessions directly from the app without interacting with the station. After charging, IONITY customers can conveniently and transparently view all charging details directly in the app,” the company said.
The new version of the app should be available ‘in the coming days’. The new ‘Go’ tariff will then also be available. “Electric mobility must be effortless and centred on the customer,” comments Ionity CEO Jeroen van Tilburg. “IONITY Go and the IONITY App empower drivers to charge on their terms – with simplicity, speed, and flexibility. It’s e-mobility done right.”
‘Ionity Motion’ can be booked for £5.49 per month and reduces the kWh price to £0.53 /kWh. Across Europe, the range for this subscription is between £0.28 and £0.55/kWh. It is the cheapest in Norway (originally NOK 3.80/kWh) and the most expensive in the Czech Republic (CZK 15/kWh).
The top tariff ‘Ionity Passport Power’ has a basic fee of £10.50/month (£7.00 in the first month), but offers a higher discount per kWh with a price of £0.43 per kilowatt hour. Here too, Norway (NOK 3.00/kWh) and the Czech Republic (CZK 12/kWh) are the two extremes in a European comparison.
Both tariffs have a flexible term, meaning they can be cancelled with a single month’s notice. This means that the tariffs can be booked as required – the ‘Motion’ tariff may be sufficient for everyday use at the end of the month, but the ‘Power’ tariff can be booked for long holiday trips. According to Ionity, the ‘Motion’ tariff should pay for itself from around 150 kilometres per month (presumably from the first charging process). The ‘Ionity Passport Power’ tariff should be cheaper from 300 kilometres per month.
