European premiere of Smart #5 – price and launch date for Germany announced

On Friday, Smart celebrated the European premiere of its electric SUV #5. The first prices were also announced: when orders open on 26 April, the EV will be available for €45,900 to €56,900.

The model variant for the above-mentioned €45,900 is the Smart #5 Pro. It is the only model variant with a 76 kWh LFP battery and a 400-volt system. From the Pro+ level upwards, all models have a 100 kWh battery made of lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NCM) and are based on the 800-volt platform.

The #5 Pro+ is priced at €50,900 in Germany, while the higher-end Premium and Pulse models start at €55,400. When orders open, the top-of-the-range model will be the #5 Summit Edition, priced at €56,900. Smart has announced that an “additional high-performance version” will follow at a later date. However, no performance data or price is available at the moment.

Smart presented the concept car at Auto China in April 2024, and in August the production model was presented in its final design. At 4.70 metres long, the former small car brand has finally moved away from its roots after two compact SUVs, because the #5 is vying for customers in the mid-size SUV class. One of its main selling points is the 800-volt battery with 100 kWh for just over €50,000. Some Stellantis electric cars in this segment offer a similarly sized battery with 97 kWh, but with a system voltage of only 400 volts, the charging times are significantly longer.

The #5 can perform the way it does thanks to Smart shareholder Geely. The core of the car is Geely’s PMA2+ platform. It enables charging with the 100 kWh battery at up to 4C, i.e. 400 kW at peak power. Smart states that charging time from 10 to 80 per cent under optimal conditions is 18 minutes. That means the average charging power during this time is 219 kW. The vehicle-to-load function to operate electrical devices with power from the EV’s battery also comes standard.

Smart offers variants with a rear motor or an additional front motor. At launch, there will be three possible combinations. The #5 Pro with the 76 kWh battery is only available with rear-wheel drive, with an output of 250 kW. The Pro+ and Premium variants with the large battery have a 267 kW rear-wheel drive. The Pulse and Summit Edition variants are the two available all-wheel-drive options with 432 kW output. At the world premiere in August, Smart also mentioned a power level of 475 kW, in which case the rear motor is upgraded from 267 to 310 kW – the front motor remains the same at 165 kW. It is possible, but not confirmed, that the 475 kW version is the announced high-performance variant.

Further confirmed data is also available for the European premiere: of the 76 kWh energy content of the #5 Pro, 74.4 kWh can be utilised. With the 11 kW on-board charger, an AC charging process takes about 8.5 hours, while at DC charging stations with at least 150 kW, charging from 10 to 80 per cent takes less than half an hour, according to Smart. The combined WLTP range is 465 kilometres.

Of the 100 kWh battery, 94 kWh can be used net. With a charging capacity of up to 400 kW peak, the charging at the DC charger takes the aforementioned 18 minutes. Since the large battery comes standard with a 22 kW onboard charger, charging times of less than 5.5 hours are possible here – and just under 11 hours with 11 kW. The two rear-wheel drives Pro+ and Premium achieve 590 kilometres according to WLTP, and the two all-wheel drives 540 kilometres.

The kerb weight ranges from 2,200 to 2,370 kilograms, with a payload of 500 kilograms – except for the Summit Edition, which has a payload of just 475 kilograms. However, the maximum towing capacity is the same for all variants at 1.6 tonnes – from the 250-kW rear-wheel-drive model to the 432-kW all-wheel-drive models. The latter can accelerate to 100 kph in 4.9 seconds, while the rear-wheel-drive models take 6.9 (Pro) or 6.5 seconds (Pro+ and Premium). There is a difference in the front trunk: due to the front engine, the all-wheel-drive vehicles can only load 47 litres, while all three rear-wheel-drive vehicles can load 72 litres. However, the rear boot is identical at 630 to 1,530 litres.

With the #5, Smart is fundamentally trying to emphasise the brand’s higher positioning with good equipment. In addition to the 13-inch infotainment touchscreen and the 10.25-inch cockpit display, the #5 Pro already features a HUD and all kinds of driving assistants, including a motorway assistant with lane change and traffic jam assistant. From the Premium equipment level upwards, a second 13-inch touchscreen is installed for the front passenger.

We are proud to launch the smart #5 as our first-ever mid-size family SUV in Europe, built on an advanced 800-Volt platform for superior efficiency and performance. As our most versatile model to date, the smart #5 combines range, usability, and future-proof technology,” says Dirk Adelmann, CEO of Smart Europe. “This milestone, coinciding with smart Europe’s fifth anniversary, showcases our international team’s innovation and engineering expertise.”
