Pulsetrain secures €6.1 million in funding for battery tech

The German battery tech startup Pulsetrain has announced the closing of a major investment round, worth €6.1 million, or about $6.6 million. Pulsetrain plans to scale and industrialise its battery management solution, which it claims can extend battery life by up to 80 per cent.

The Munich-based startup Pulsetrain has secured seed funding totalling 6.1 million euros. The funding, led by Vsquared Ventures and Planet A and with participation from Climate Club, will be used by Pulsetrain to drive product development and prepare for scaling and industrialisation. Pulsestrain technology enables electric vehicle manufacturers to extend battery life by up to 80% and increase range and performance while reducing manufacturing costs.

Pulsetrain was formerly known as Bavertis, which was originally founded in April 2022. Its founders included Leopold König, who is also co-founder of CustomCells, Thomas Plaschko, founder of enfas, and Niclas Lehnert, who was co-founder of Bavertis. “The founding team brings decades of battery sector expertise and experience building successful technology companies, combining deep industry knowledge with a proven ability to scale.”

On September 18, 2024, Bavertis then rebranded itself as Pulsetrain, which the company describes as reflecting “its core technology of optimising battery cells through targeted pulse loading.” The word Pulse is combined with Train, referencing powertrains, but also “encompassing charging systems, battery management, and inverters,” according to Pulsetrain.

Now, Pulsetrain is gearing up to bring its battery solution to market, which the company says can extend battery life by up to 80%, enable faster charging, and improve sustainability “through battery reuse, enhancing EV efficiency, safety, and environmental impact.” Initially, the technology focused on two-wheelers and commercial vehicles, “before expanding into the automotive, aviation, agriculture, and shipping sectors.”

Pulsetrain’s solution is set up to function as a holistic approach, “integrating a Battery Management System (BMS), inverter, and charging electronics into a highly integrated “In-Battery” solution.” A multilevel inverter at the core of the system enables a more efficient energy through hardware as well as software.

“With our depth of experience, we saw a market opportunity to create technology that enables EV producers to make vehicles safer, longer-lasting, more cost-effective, and globally competitive,” explained Niclas Lehnert.

Thomas Plaschko further explains: “Today’s powertrain technologies originate from traditional electrical engineering, while battery systems have their roots in chemistry. Additionally, a significant software component is required to control battery-powered vehicles. Pulsetrain unites these three fields of expertise, developing a new, more powerful software-driven architecture designed for e-mobility. We reduce weight, increase battery lifespan, and simultaneously lower costs.”
