Prague considers mandetory electric taxis by 2030

The Prague city council's transport committee is considering only permitting battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell electric taxis in the city from 2029. The final decision lies with the city councillors, who must approve this in the form of a decree.

If the city council approves the measure to allow only electric taxis in Prague, the Czech capital would follow Oslo where electric taxis have been mandatory since November 1, 2024. In Hamburg, electric cabs have been mandatory for all newly registered cabs since the beginning of 2025.

According to Prague Morning, Markéta Braun Kohlová, the coordinator of Prague’s mobility plan, nearly 16,000 taxis were registered in the city last year. This number, which includes both traditional taxi services and ride-hailing platforms like Uber and Bolt, has risen steeply from fewer than 2,000 taxis in 2010.

Although Prague’s air currently meets legal pollution limits, European regulations will mean that these will have to tighten by 2030, reducing these levels by half.
