Jolt receives million-dollar grant for HPC network in Canada

Charging infrastructure manufacturer Jolt has received 194 million Canadian dollars from the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) to install up to 1,500 fast-chargers across the country. The company is already active in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

The sum provided by CIB is equivalent to about 130 million euros.

What is unique about Jolt is that, according to CIB’s press release, “each station provides up to 7 kWh of free, fast charging per car per day, equivalent to approximately 50 kilometres of driving range.” That figure applies to customers using the Jolt app, and the company points out that the “allowance resets at midnight.”

The reason Jolt can offer free energy is that its EV chargers each have two screens. The integrated Digital Out-of-Home advertising network can be booked by advertisers and funds the free charging allocation. According to media reports, the company has already signed advertisers such as Volkswagen, Audi and the Ontario Government.

“By investing in expanding EV charging infrastructure, we are supporting Canadians’ need for accessible and convenient charging points in urban centres,” says Ehren Cory, Chief Executive Officer of Canada Infrastructure Bank. “Our strategic partnership with JOLT highlights a commitment to supporting the deployment of innovative technology which will create jobs and remove a potential barrier to EV adoption.”

“Curbside fast charging is critical to the transition to electric vehicles, and providing fast, free charging to those who do not have access to off-street charging is JOLT’s goal for its expansion in Canada,” added Jolt CEO Doug McNamee.

Jolt has already begun rolling out its chargers in Canada, installing the first two places to plug in in the Greater Toronto Area in September 2024. These offer charging speeds of up to 50 kW. At the time, the company stated that its goal was to install “up to 5,000 public DC fast chargers across Canada.”

The company started in Australia and says that it has become “the largest free EV charging network across Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.”
