VW shows side view of the upcoming small electric car ID.1

VW has presented the first sketches of the upcoming ID.1. After a first teaser image of the front was published last week, the two sketches now also show a side view of the planned entry-level electric car that should cost around 20,000 euros.

Volkswagen published the sketches on the LinkedIn social network. The German carmaker kept the text brief: “Bold confidence meets timeless simplicity! With its compact yet spacious design, our new entry-level electric [concept] car blends functionality and style effortlessly,” reads a short comment. It continues: “From the charismatic front to the smiling rear end, every detail is to create a joyful connection.”

The subsequent sentence could indicate that VW is also trying to “humanise” the model in terms of design. An approach that Renault, for example, is currently pursuing with the electric Renault 5. The aim is to turn the vehicle into a companion – including a likeable ‘face.’ One thing is clear: the sketches echo some of the features of the ID.Life concept car that the manufacturer unveiled in 2021, such as the compact, angular basic design and the rounded headlights.

Volkswagen will unveil the ID.1 in full on 5 March. However, the premiere is for a show car and not yet a production model. Nevertheless, the company promises a trend-setting preview of the upcoming entry-level electric car for “about” 20,000 euros. It is already clear from the designs published so far that the ID.1 will stand out visually from the ID.2 – or more precisely the concept car ID2.all. This can be seen above all in the differently designed front section.

VW has not yet provided any details about the technology. The world premiere of the production version is not scheduled until 2027. The ID2.all, on the other hand, was presented in March 2023, and the production model is currently scheduled for 2026. Volkswagen is at least clearly communicating that it wants to reach new customer groups with a base price of approximately €20,000 for the ID.1 (not “under” €20,000, but “about” €20,000).

In a recent LinkedIn post, Jens Katemann, Head of Communications at the Volkswagen brand, refers to the unveiling of the “D.EVERY1” on 5 March, which clearly indicates what the ID.1 show car will be called.

Can we talk for a second about the ridiculous size of those wheels?Hotwheels™ aesthetic? Most I've ever seen. More affordable? No. Rotational inertia? A lot. This has to be intentional at this point, right? Is VW on to something with regards to driving style and economy? Also , unveiling the ID.1 when the ID.2 isn't even for sale yet? (I drive an ID.3 and I love it)
