US Republicans call for a new fee for EV owners
A bill introduced by Republican senators provides for the introduction of a new tax on electric vehicles in the amount of 1,000 dollars to finance road repairs, according to a report by the news agency Reuters. They want to put electric cars on an equal footing with combustion engines. Currently, most of the revenue for state-funded road repairs in the US is collected via taxes on diesel and petrol.
Senator Deb Fischer, one of the initiators of the bill, says that the one-time fee of 1,000 dollars would be levied at the time of purchase and would be roughly equivalent to what drivers of conventional vehicles pay in federal taxes on petrol for road maintenance over a period of ten years. “EVs can weigh up to three times as much as gas-powered cars, creating more wear and tear on our roads and bridges. It’s only fair that they pay into the Highway Trust Fund just like other cars do,” Fischer is quoted as saying by Reuters.
