Serbia extends EV subsidies to the end of 2025

Serbia will continue to offer purchase premiums for electric cars of up to 5,000 euros in 2025. The budget for this year is 170 million dinars, which corresponds to just under 1.5 million euros.

Private individuals and entrepreneurs can submit applications until the end of October. Purchase premiums range from 250 to 5,000 euros, depending on the type of vehicle.

For instance, vehicles categorised as L1 and L2, meaning electric mopeds and light tricycles, will receive the Serbian dinar equivalent of 250 euros. Electric motorcycles with or without a sidecar, heavy electric tricycles, as well as light and heavy quadricycles are eligible for up to 500 euros in subsidies. “M1 and N1 vehicles operating exclusively on electric power,” meaning passenger cars with up to nine seats and commercial vehicles of up to 3.5 tonnes qualify for a purchase premium of 5,000 euros.

Other restrictions apply. For instance, those leasing an electric vehicle will only receive the subsidy after paying “at least 15% of the purchase price.” And “those buying a vehicle outright will receive the subsidy only after proving full payment of the non-subsidised portion of the price.”

The subsidy scheme was first launched in Serbia in 2020. At the time, pure EVs and electric light commercial vehicles were subsidised with 5,000 euros, while PHEVs and HEVs were eligible for 3,500 and 2,500 euros, respectively. In the last five years, the Serbian Ministry of Environmental Protection subsidised more than 2,800 electric and hybrid vehicles. Since last year, only purely electric vehicles are eligible for purchase premiums.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environmental Protection Irena Vujović believes that the production of the Fiat Grande Panda, which rolls off the production line in Kragujevac, Serbia, “will give an additional impetus to the demand for subsidies, because this model of electric passenger vehicle can also be eligible for support in the amount of 5,000 euros.”

She added: “If, as in previous years, it turns out that demand has exceeded the provided amount, we will do our best to provide additional funds for everyone who submitted a request within the stipulated deadline so that they can purchase an environmentally friendly vehicle with state support.”
