The government intends to achieve this with a wide-ranging package of measures, including financial incentives for companies, institutions and homeowners’ associations to create charging infrastructure and for the use of electric vehicles in company fleets.

Under the new initiative, there are multiple targets, from the above-mentioned tripling of the electric vehicles present, as well as doubling the number of charging stations in the region. Additionally, the government’s vehicle fleet is to be 90% electric in the same time frame and a publicity campaign is to be launched to familiarize the public with EV technology and benefits.

Local industry will also benefit, as the government has announced that it aims to strengthen the local value chains of the Catalan industry, as well as establish and consolidate public-private governance.

By the time everything has been set into law, the initiators expect about 150,000 new EVs registered, including motorbikes and business fleets, as well as the creation of 9,000 new public access charging points owned by the Generalitat of Catalonia. In energy terms, the CO2 savings are estimated at 470,000 tons.

“We have the will, we have the talent, we have companies involved and we have a leadership position in the sustainable mobility and automotive sector. Now it’s time to make decisions and adapt with a great degree of self-demand to seize the opportunities and attract future investments in clean technologies and smart mobility,” said the president of the government of Catalonia, Salvador Illa.
