The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has launched an international tender to purchase 125 new electric buses. These will go into service in the capital Athens.

The tender follows an amendment to the programme for electric vehicles for public transport under the Recovery and Resilience Fund and was published jointly with the Ministry of Economy and Finance. Deputy Finance Minister Nikos Papathanassis signed a decision allocating EU funds totalling 88.3 million euros for the project, which is due to be completed in summer 2026.

The 125 buses, which are all 12-metre models, will be included in the current programme to purchase 950 new buses with environmentally friendly technology by 2025. In 2020, Athens and Thessaloniki announced that they considered expanding their bus fleets by 1,300 buses – most of them electric. A total of 250 electric buses from Chinese manufacturer Yutong already went into operation in both cities last year.

“The announcement of this new tender demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving public transportation,” Minister Christos Staikouras explained. “This project not only advances the full modernization of the fleet but also offers enhanced services to passengers, boosts accessibility, and reduces the environmental footprint.”

“Renewing the fleet with new, environmentally friendly buses showcases the direction of European funds towards public benefits,” added Deputy Finance Minister Nikos Papathanasis. “The secured funds and the government’s economic strategy bring returns to all citizens.”
