Ikea falls short of electrifying all home deliveries in Australia

Ikea Australia had a goal. It wanted to replace all its delivery vehicles with electric versions by 2025. However, in January, only 65 per cent of deliveries were electric. According to Ikea, infrastructure is to blame.

Let’s start with the good news. As mentioned, more than half of all home deliveries in Australia were made by zero-emission vehicles in January 2025. Up from 5 per cent in 2022. Moreover, the share will rise to 90 per cent by the end of the year, covering all deliveries in Australia’s metropolitan areas.

The remaining ten per cent are the bad news. These concern “regional volume,” the company specifies, adding that “we aim to achieve this as soon as technology allows.” Ikea Australia announced in 2018 that it wanted to electrify its entire fleet by 2025.

One way that Ikea Australia is helping things move along is by investing in charging infrastructure. Specifically, the company states: “Guided by our big ambition, through investment, innovation and collaboration, such as our $4.5 million investment in a national charging infrastructure network for our partners, we have been working hard to address accessibility challenges and other barriers for our delivery partners.”

On top of calling on authorities and partners to icrease the number and the accessibility of chargers in the country, Ikea Australia says the industry needs “targeted policy from state and federal governments to help overcome the unique challenges of the delivery ecosystem and support the electrification of delivery vehicles including vans and trucks.”

Ikea is part of the EV100 initiative that calls for a change to zero-emission vehicles and for Ikea, this means electrifying 25% of deliveries by 2020, and to deliver with EVs only by 2025 reportedly. In India, the Swedish furniture and homeware retailer recently electrified deliveries in several cities.
