Ceva Logistics introduces 23 new electric trucks to its fleet

French freight forwarder Ceva Logistics is expanding its fleet with 23 battery-electric trucks. These are intended to help reduce the environmental impact of transport. Ceva Logistics already had 518 electric trucks and vans in operation.

The new vehicle fleet comprises 21 trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 7.5 tonnes, 16 tonnes and 19 tonnes, as well as two tractor units. They will carry out collection and distribution journeys from eight Ceva sites in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Commissioning of these new electric trucks began at the end of 2024 and will continue in the first half of 2025.

However, Ceva Logistics does not reveal which manufacturers will supply the vehicles. A press photo (see above) shows an electric tractor unit from Volvo Trucks. Ceva Logistics has received a subsidy from the French Agency for the Environment and Energy Management (Ademe) for the 21 electric trucks used in France.

“By strengthening the fleet for our ground operations with an additional 23 electric trucks, we are progressing in our journey towards more sustainable logistics, which we believe includes the use of electric or low carbon vehicles,” says Ceva manager Cédric Chacon. “This investment illustrates one of the fundamental pillars of our CSR strategy, ‘Acting for the Planet,’ and demonstrates our desire to offer sustainable transport solutions to our customers.”

Ceva Logistics prepared for the arrival of the new electric trucks by installing charging stations at its sites in Lille, Rouen, Gennevilliers, Bordeaux, Lyon and Avignon in France, as well as in Oosterhout in the Netherlands and Braine l’Alleud in Belgium. The 85 charging stations required were set up to charge these electric trucks and offer the possibility of charging light vehicles at the facilities. Ceva now has a network of more than 300 charging stations in France and 1,035 worldwide.

Ceva Logistics has ambitious goals for the electrification of its fleet. In 2023, the Marseille-based company announced its intention to have a global fleet of 1,450 electric commercial vehicles by the end of 2025, including 1,000 electric delivery vans, 300 electric trucks and 150 electric tractor units. However, it is doubtful whether the timetable is still realistic, as the company will only have 541 electric vehicles once the new trucks have been introduced.

Ceva Logistics no longer mentions this figure in the current press release. Instead, the company mentions the number of 1,100 low-carbon vehicles that it already has in operation. That presumably includes vehicles powered by bio-LNG or HVO. The company hopes to be net zero by 2050. The use of alternative fuels and electric vehicles is one of the three main pillars of Ceva Logistics’ strategy to achieve this goal.
