Volkswagen teases the ID.1

At a works meeting at its headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, the VW core brand gave employees a first glimpse of the small electric car ID.1. For the public, there is only a first rendering - and the announcement of the premiere for the beginning of March.

However, this premiere will only be a show car, but it will offer a preview of the upcoming entry-level electric car for “about” 20,000 euros, as VW emphasises. The published teaser image makes it clear that the ID.1 will differ visually from the ID.2 – or, more precisely, ID2.all concept car.

However, VW has yet to provide any information on the technology or the rest of the design; there is only one front view of the concept. The “world premiere of the production model is scheduled for 2027” – but this does not mean that the production version will be available to purchase in 2027. The German carmaker does not make any promises at this point. The ID2.all was already presented in March 2023, but the production model will not be available until 2026. The only thing that is clear is that the ID.1 will reach new customer groups with a base price of around 20,000 euros (not “under” 20,000 euros, but “about” 20,000 euros).

“An affordable, high-quality, and profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe – that’s the Champions League of automotive engineering,” says VW brand boss Thomas Schäfer. “With the conclusion of negotiations in December, we set the largest future plan in Volkswagen’s history in motion. We are pursuing an ambitious path to ensure we achieve our shared goals with full commitment. A key step in this is making e-mobility attractive for everyone – that is our brand promise.” Schäfer did not specify where exactly the ID.1 will be built in Europe.
