GM cancels third production shift in Mexico
The plant has now returned to two shifts per day in January after increasing it to three last May, a spokesperson told Automotive News. The Ramos Arizpe plant produces the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Cadillac Optiq and Honda Prologue electric cars, among others.
With the decision to cut production by a shift, yahoo estimates that around 800 jobs will be eliminated. Despite such a large difference in staff, Honda does not estimate that the Prologue production will be affected, and has already issued a statement that it this is a normal production adjustment “in order to meet customer needs and market conditions. We will continue to carefully manage production and inventory for our entire product lineup to meet anticipated demand in 2025.”
“In early 2025, we changed the plant’s production schedule to increase efficiency following the decision by Honda to reduce Prologue volumes, and an adjustment in the mix of production of GM vehicles at the site,” GM wrote in a statement. “The company is working with impacted employees and stakeholders to ensure an orderly transition.”
The decision is also likely related to the new US president’s tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, which now both see additional tariffs of 25% for imports to the USA. China was also hit with a ten per cent tariff addition.
Towards the end of last year, General Motors still had big plans to produce electric vehicles at the facility, which still manufactures the gasoline-powered Chevy Blazer. However, with the current political climate in the USA, the plans are subject to regulatory uncertainty. Work to convert the factory for electric vehicle production began back in 2022.
