E.ON to install ultra-rapid charging infrastructure in Scotland

E.ON has announced plans for new ultra-rapid EV charging hubs at six sites across Scotland. The 42 high-powered chargers will be installed in key locations near cities such as Dundee, Edinburgh, Stirling, and Dunfermline.

This is not the first installation in the region for the German energy company, as E.ON further specifies that the new charging infrastructure addition will join E.ON’s first ultra-rapid hub in Scotland, which is already operational in Aberdeen. The Aberdeen hub already has 12 charging bays active, and presents E.ON’s most northern EV charging station in the UK; “strategically positioned at the gateway to the Granite City.”

E.ON advertises that its ultra-fast charging stations are capable of delivering up to 150 miles of range in about 10 minutes, or a “combined charging capacity of 12.6MW equivalent to the power needs of 40,000 UK homes.” That translates to about 300 kW per charging port. That is not the highest that E.ON’s charging stations can achieve, as the company announced plans to install 400 kW charging stations on the border region between Germany and Denmark a few days ago.

“Our goal is to make electric driving seamless and accessible for everyone, and these new charging hubs are a significant step forward in Scotland’s transition to cleaner transportation. But this is just the start,” explained Dev Chana, Managing Director of E.ON Drive Infrastructure UK. “E.ON operates thousands of charging points right across Europe and these new hubs for Scotland are the latest part of a bigger drive to expand our EV charging network across the UK, part of a far wider expansion across the UK and another example of our commitment to creating greener infrastructure across the country.”

E.ON has been steadily gearing up its charging network’s reach and charging capacities, and installed 72 ultra-fast charging bays across England and Wales in 2024, alongside 8,000 home chargers and 2,000 chargers for small businesses. Last year, the first truck charging station was opened together with MAN, which currently also delivers 400 kW, but is intended to be upgraded to an MCS charging standard later. Bidirectional charging technology was also introduced at the end of 2024.
