Tesla’s V4 Superchargers now offer 325 kW in North America

Tesla announced that all V4 Superchargers in North America now offer up to 325 kW. The only Tesla model to benefit for now is the Cybertruck. However, EVs from other brands can also access the increased charging power.

The first Superchargers of the V4 generation have been in operation since spring 2023, in Harderwijk in the Netherlands to be precise. An installation in China followed earlier this month. The V4 generation is characterised, among other things, by the higher charging stations and a longer charging cable, which (for the first time at Tesla) is attached to the outside of the charging station. As Tesla can no longer reserve the stations for its own vehicles (with a standardised charging port at the rear left), the longer cable should make it easier to charge third-party vehicles – and the payment terminal for ad-hoc charging is also aimed at non-Teslas.

However, the maximum charging power has so far remained at 250 kW, as with the V3 Superchargers. There was a simple reason for this: the V4 stalls were still combined with switch cabinets from the V3 generation. The bottleneck was thus not the stall, but the cabinet in the background.

Tesla has been working on two things: Preparing for the roll-out of V4 cabinets, thanks to which the charging power at the V4 stalls will increase to up to 500 kW – with the first locations due to open this year. At the same time, the US electric car manufacturer is working on making the combination of V4 stalls and V3 cabinets more powerful, which will now result in an increase from 250 to 325 kW of charging power across the board. However, only in North America for the time being.

The Cybertruck, the first Tesla car with an 800-volt system, will benefit from this increase and can charge faster in future. However, the Tesla Model 3, S, X and Y, will remain at a peak of 250 kW on the vehicle side.

Among the other electric cars benefiting from this step is the newly launched Lucid Gravity. From 31 January, owners of the luxury electric SUV will be able to charge at Tesla’s Superchargers without an adapter thanks to the NACS connection. According to Lucid, the Air, which has already been available for some time, will also gain access to the Tesla network during the second quarter.
