DOE invests in Forge Battery’s production in North Carolina
With the newly acquired funds, Forge Battery expects to begin construction on the North Carolina Gigafactory expansion in early 2025. Until then, Forge Battery stated that it intends to produce 21700 cell products on the new manufacturing line at Forge Battery’s facility in Colorado before transitioning production to the Morrisville Gigafactory in North Carolina.
“Forge Battery is ready to power tomorrow’s most critical battery-powered innovations,” said Paul Lichty, CEO of Forge Nano, the parent company of Forge Battery. “The Department of Energy has been crucial to our future success where we expect to showcase the United States’ competitiveness in lithium-ion cell performance, safety and manufacturing.”
Forge Nano launched on the market in 2011 and received prominent backing with Volkswagen investing $10 million in 2019. By 2023, the plan to build a battery factory in North Carolina was announced. In 2024, General Motors also joined the investors, with another $10 million investment. Forge Nano had also announced intentions to deliver its first cell samples last year, which were 21700-format cylindrical lithium-ion battery cells coated with its ‘Atomic Armor’ surface technology.
