Polestar Energy expands to additional markets
To date, Polestar’s energy initiative has been a pilot project in the UK and the Netherlands. Following the successful pilot phase, the company is now rolling out the offer to a total of eleven markets, including the DACH region. Specifically, Polestar Energy is now available in Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Austria, Italy and Spain. Further offers and markets are to be added over the course of the year, according to Polestar.
Customers will be able to use the corresponding ‘Polestar Energy’ app to specify when they want to use their car and how high the charge level should be. The charging station then decides exactly when to charge the car in order to meet the user’s specifications on the one hand and to charge at the lowest possible price on the other. “Balancing demand and charging when demand is lower results in lower energy costs, either at source in the form of a grid premium or in the form of lower energy costs in the electricity bill,” says Polestar. According to the company, charging costs could be reduced by up to 30 per cent.
In the course of 2025, bidirectional charging with vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-home functions will also be offered for the Polestar 3. This will not be possible with the Polestar 2, for example, due to the built-in onboard charger. However, Polestar 3 customers will still need a special wall box charging station for bidirectional charging. This comes from Zaptec and “can be purchased directly from Polestar as part of an exclusive offer that also includes the installation costs”. However, Polestar is not yet quoting prices for this.
“A saving of 30 per cent on charging costs at home can make a big difference. That’s why we are introducing this offer on a large scale,” says Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller. “Other markets will follow in the course of this year. As soon as we add the vehicle-to-grid functions to Polestar’s product range, this will bring even greater added value to our customers.”
