Xpeng and BP Pulse sign charging deal in China

The Chinese carmaker Xpeng and BP pulse have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to open their charging network in China for each other. The deal will give customers access to more than 30,000 charging points nationwide.

Moreover, the two companies will set up joint pilot projects in select Chinese cities, installing co-branded ultra-fast chargers and sharing equipment and sites. These will be built in China’s core economic circles, which Car News China explains “include building transportation networks and R&D parks and formulating environmental regulations.” The goal is to create a layout for the fast-charging locations that provide “users with a higher density, higher quality, safer, and more reliable charging experience,” the Chinese portal further reports.

The agreement will also entail other areas of cooperation. Namely in photovoltaics, energy storage, charging, and marketing.

Xpeng operates around 10,000 charging points at more than 2,000 charging locations in 420 cities in China. BP pulse has 23,000 charging piles at 1,000 locations in the country. In September 2024, Xpeng began installing its S5 HPC charging stations with up to 800 kW of power in China. Until then, it had been using its S4 column, launched in 2022.

The now-announced deal with BP seems similar to what Xpeng agreed upon with technology partner Volkswagen last week. In that case, too, the companies will give each other’s customers access to their respective charging networks, and look into setting up co-branded fast-chargers in the country. Xpeng also recently signed a cooperation agreement with Xiaomi, giving the latter access to its chargers.
