Torqeedo launches sales in Europe via Yamaha dealer network
The new markets specifically include the UK, Ireland, Switzerland, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, Spain and Portugal. On offer will be the Torqeedo Travel Ultralight models (1-3 hp equivalent), the Travel product family (2-5 hp equivalent), which are suitable for smaller boats up to two tonnes, and the more powerful Cruise models (6-25 hp equivalent) for larger boats up to twelve tonnes.
“We are delighted to broaden our presence through Yamaha’s extensive and reliable dealer network. This partnership not only enhances our ability to introduce our innovative drive technologies to additional dealers, but also leverages local expertise and deep market knowledge,” explained Timm Burmeister, Director of Global Business Development.
Torqeedo was founded in Starnberg in 2005 and develops and produces electric and hybrid drive systems from 0.5 to 200 kW for commercial and leisure applications. Cologne-based engine manufacturer Deutz acquired Torqeedo in 2017. However, Deutz initiated a sales process in 2023 after rumours of millions in losses, quality problems and mismanagement were never confirmed.
Yamaha and Torqeedo have been joined since Yamaha took over Torqeedo in April of last year, a process which started in January of 2024. Since then, Torqeedo has revealed a new luxury houseboat with an integrated photovoltaic system, as well as the electrification of a 138-year-old ferry in Berlin.
