Hypnos Beds adds two Volvo FM Electric trucks to its UK fleet

In the UK, Hypnos Beds, a manufacturer of mattresses and beds, will now deliver its products using two electric Volvo FM Electrics. They replace two existing diesel trucks and will be operated by logistics partner DFDS.

Specifically, DFDS will be using a 4×2 curtainside rigid and a 4×2 tractor unit to “deliver the [Hypnos Beds’] range of luxury mattresses and bed furniture to retail outlets, hotels and distribution centres in London and Milton Keynes respectively.” In terms of technical specifications, the Volvo FM Electric trucks deliver up to 490 kW of power, coupled with up to 300 kilometres of range per battery charge.

In this case, the new rigid is equipped with five batteries, while the FM Electric tractor unit boasts the maximum of six. The trucks also use Volvo’s new Camera Monitoring System (CMS), which replaces the vehicles’ exterior mirrors.

According to the press release, Volvo Trucks also supplied the necessary infrastructure. The two 43kW AC chargers installed at Hypnos Beds’ Princes Risborough factory, located about halfway between London and Oxford, will allow the two electric trucks to charge overnight.

“Introducing these two electric trucks into the Hypnos Beds fleet is an important step in accelerating its ambitious sustainability goals, as well as enhancing the efficiency of its operations,” says James Ferguson, Regional Operations ManagerJames Ferguson, Regional Operations Manager at DFDS. “Thanks to Volvo’s support – which included installing the necessary charging infrastructure and delivering driver training – we are fully prepared to meet the increasing demand for low-emission road transport solutions, with this partnership reinforcing our shared commitment to providing innovative logistics services and intensifying our decarbonisation efforts.”

While Volvo Trucks does not mention this specifically in its press release, the two electric trucks are likely part of a delivery announced in October. At the time, DFDS added a total of ten new Volvo FM Electric trucks to its fleet, saying that they would be used goods for the company’s operations in the east and northwest of England and Ireland. Earlier that year, DFDS said it had ordered another 100 electric trucks from Volvo, essentially doubling the number of electric vehicles from Volvo Trucks in its fleet.
