Sweden’s bus market shrinks, but electric buses remain in demand

In Sweden, every third newly registered bus in 2024 was an electric vehicle. However, the overall market in the Scandinavian country experienced a slump: only 783 buses were registered across all drive types in the past twelve months.

Specifically, the Swedish bus market shrank by 30 per cent compared to 2023. 235 of the 783 newly registered buses (of all weight classes) were electric buses. This also represents a decline (2023: 246 electric buses). However, as the drop of 5.6 per cent compared to the overall market is very moderate, electric buses still increased their share of all registrations from 28 to 32 per cent. This means that one in three new buses in Sweden in 2024 had an electric drive on board. In December alone, 99 units were added.

This was reported by the Swedish trade publication Bussmagasinet.se on the basis of data from the industry organisation Mobility Sweden. Meanwhile, new registrations of diesel buses in Sweden fell by 36.2 per cent and those of gas buses by as much as 91 per cent.
