Tesla brings its V4 Supercharger to China
The V4 Supercharger celebrated its world premiere in March 2023 in Harderwijk in the Netherlands, where a total of 16 units were put into operation. The main distinguishing feature of the V4 Supercharger, in addition to the higher housing, is a longer charging cable, which is intended to simplify charging for electric cars of third-party brands.
Accordingly, Tesla not only wants to roll out V4 Superchargers in China. The company also plans to open them up to electric cars from other brands. The Tesla chargers of earlier generations in China have been open to third-party brands since 2023.
With a V4 charging station, electric cars can be charged with up to 500 kW – if they are combined with a V4 generation cabinet. “This move will enhance charging efficiency and experience,” Tesla China says. The V4 Supercharger is the latest and most powerful charger from Tesla. According to the US car manufacturer, it supports architectures from 400 to 1,000 volts and is easier and faster to install.
According to Tesla, the company currently operates 60,000 Superchargers worldwide, 20 per cent of which are located in China, i.e. around 11,500 charging points. Tesla has its own 5,000-square-metre Supercharger factory in Shanghai, which was completed in 2021. Up to 10,000 units of the predecessor model V3 Supercharger have been produced there each year to date.
