New York receives second round of NEVI funding

The state of New York has received an additional $28.5 million in government funding to install fast-chargers along major travel corridors in the US state. Some 21 million dollars had already been made available.

The money comes from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) formula funding programme, which funds up to 80% of eligible project costs for EV chargers along designated Alternative Fuel Corridors. This is already the second round of NEVI funding for the state of New York and will focus “on locations south of Interstate 84, including the lower Hudson Valley, New York City, and Long Island.”

The chargers must be accessible to the public 24/7 and allow at least four EVs to charge simultaneously. Moreover, all available charging points must provide at least 150 kW, even if all are in use. There are additional uptime requirements, and all charging stations must offer CCS and NACS (now J3400) connectors.

“This critical federal NEVI funding supports New York State’s ongoing leadership to invest in a network of electric vehicle fast chargers, particularly in areas downstate that face heavy traffic,” Governor Hochul said. “Making quick, reliable charging easily available will encourage more people to drive EVs that help to lower pollution from vehicles, provide cleaner air for New Yorkers, and improve health in our communities.”

As mentioned above, this is the second round of NEVI funding for New York. In October 2023, it was said the state would receive 37.4 million dollars in funding from the NEVI fund. Overall, New York, namely the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), will receive approximately $175 million through NEVI over five years.

The first tranche of 21 million dollars has been made available, and proposals are now being reviewed. As the second tranche now amounts to nearly 30 million dollars, the amount of financial support was clearly adjusted. To benefit from the second round of funding, companies must turn in their proposals no later than 18 March.
