Milwaukee to build charging infrastructure
The city of Milwaukee received the grant through the United States Department of Transportation’s Charging and Fueling Infrastructure program. According to the statement released by the Common Council of Milwaukee, at least 40 per cent of the chargers will be erected in disadvantaged neighbourhoods, and the rest will be installed at public library locations throughout the city.
The project work plan is set to take place in two phases. The first phase will ascertain locations for the charging stations in conformance with federal criteria and further public engagement. The city will conclude preliminary engineering and also designate a partner. The Council will approve the locations in the next phase, and construction will commence. In order of preference, the charging stations at the Milwaukee Public Library locations will get approval first. Milwaukee County parks or cultural sites will also get charging stations.
This project sets the city of Milwaukee up for expanding electric vehicle charging networks. The City is working on a Climate and Equity Plan, which includes reducing community-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030 and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Council Members said that the Common Council’s support for electric vehicles for both municipal use and public use is a key part of achieving the goals of the Climate and Equity Plan.
