Mercedes starts street testing new electric SUV
The as-yet-unnamed model is the second series based on the AMG.EA, which is short for AMG Electric Architecture. The test cycle for a four-door coupé began in northern Sweden in the spring.
Although Mercedes-AMG has published the first photo of a heavily camouflaged prototype as part of the current announcement, there is still not much information about the electric SUV. It is merely announced that the “new SUV also showcases the pioneering role of the high-performance drive in the innovative all-electric architecture.” “This includes the use of axial-flux motors and a new high-performance battery concept,” writes AMG. However, no figures are given.
However, Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes-Maybach divisions, emphasised when the model was first announced in November that the motto for the high-performance platform was ‘AMG First, EV Second.’ In other words, the focus will be on performance and driving performance, which could mean that EV characteristics such as efficiency and range could suffer. At the same time, however, the importance of the Vision EQXX technology platform, which is characterised by its enormous efficiency, was also emphasised. The exact result from Mercedes-AMG therefore remains to be seen.
So far, the prototype shows typical Mercedes features. Under the camouflage, the bonnet looks similar to a Mercedes EQE SUV, for example, although the bumper may not be quite as aerodynamically rounded – a distinctive bead can be seen under the foil. The roofline and side view are again reminiscent of the EQE SUV – right down to details such as the retractable door handles.
