California announces income-based incentive for e-bikes
The new state incentive is reserved for applicants with a household income of 300% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). For a single household, that translates to an annual income of a maximum of $45,180, while priority is given to all who earn 33,885 dollars, the equivalent of 225 per cent of FPL. For a four-person household, the cap is $93,600 (300% of FPL) or $70,200 (225% of FPL) for priority applicants. The maximum qualifying gross household income for different household sizes can be found here.
According to the California Air Ressource Board (CARB), the ‘California E-bike Incentive Project’ was launched in cooperation with more than 20 community-based organisations, which will assist individuals with applications. The goal is to replace car trips when possible.
“By using e-bikes, people can get around and meet everyday needs while improving air quality,” said Dr. Steven Cliff, CARB’s Executive Officer. “Prioritizing equity and access is key as we work to achieve our zero-emissions goals, and this incentive program will support those efforts by helping e-bikes be part of the solution.”
The programme officially kicks off on 18 December. Applications can be handed in online starting at 6 p.m. Once approved, income-eligible applicants will receive a voucher which they can use at a participating retailer. In order to collect the voucher, all riders must also watch a safety video, CARB explains.
