BYD enters into cooperation for electric two-wheelers

The vehicle and battery manufacturer BYD has entered into a cooperation agreement with TAILG, a Chinese manufacturer of electric two-wheelers, to develop batteries for its vehicles. That makes TAILG the first major electric two-wheeler manufacturer to work with BYD.

BYD’s batteries will be used in TAILG’s electric motorbikes, electric scooters and e-bikes. Neither TAILG’s press release nor Chinese media reports provide any further details on the type of batteries – but BYD suggests that they will be lithium iron phosphate batteries. However, the technical specifications of the batteries are not yet known.

TAILG announced the partnership on the sidelines of a product presentation – but no details were given as to when the first models with BYD batteries will become available. “The merger of the two companies is not only a strong alliance of the two best new energy companies in China, but also a sign that we will work together to promote the new upgrade of the new energy industry,” says Lei Lei, General Manager of BYD’s Consumer Battery Division. TAILG explains: “We plan to address challenges in two-wheel battery technology and will work to customise BYD batteries to match the lifespan of the vehicles they power.”

In February, BYD’s battery subsidiary FinDreams announced that it would be stepping up its research and development into batteries for electric two-wheelers. Even then, BYD was said to be seeking partnerships in this area. With TAILG, it has now joined forces with one of China’s largest manufacturers. According to TAILG, the two companies will work on improving battery safety. This statement is likely to be strongly aimed at the Chinese market: After 15 people died in a fire in a residential building in Nanking in February, which was allegedly caused by a faulty e-bike battery, the issue is the focus of consumers and authorities.

TAILG – like its new partner BYD – is based in Shenzhen. CarNewsChina cites the company’s website, saying that TAILG has a production capacity of 15 million units per year and sells its two-wheelers in over 90 countries.
