The Italian company has two roles in the project: On the one hand, it will lead one of the eight working groups. On the other hand, it will develop a versatile and safe dismantling solution for handling batteries based on robotics, machine learning and Industry 4.0.

“Our advanced robotic disassembly solution will not only enhance the efficiency and safety of the disassembly process but also support the circular economy by maximising the recovery and reuse of materials from end-of-life batteries,” explains Andrew Lloyd, Chief of Engineering at Comau.

By building a comprehensive solution that efficiently handles electric car batteries and stationary battery formats, the project aims to help address a critical aspect of the electric vehicle lifecycle and further the overall goal of reducing waste and reusing valuable materials.

The project’s goal is to create a standardised, automated, safe, and cost-efficient system that processes lithium-ion batteries for secondary and third-party use and recycling. Reinforce will focus on optimising collection and logistics routes, improving diagnostic and recovery techniques and introducing safe and efficient dismantling processes that optimise reuse while enabling full traceability.

“This project underscores the increasing need to develop a circular electrification path and represents a significant step forward in sustainable battery management,” adds Lloyd.

Comau is active not only in recycling but also in the production of electric car batteries. Together with LiNa Energy from the UK, it is developing a manufacturing solution for solid-state sodium battery cells. Comau is also involved in the EU’s BATTwin project for sustainable battery production.
